About History on Horseback

I’m Dr Miriam A Bibby, and I’m passionate about horses, history and archaeology. I spend as much of my time as possible combining these interests and writing about them. I’m co-editor in chief of Cheiron: the Journal of Equine and Equestrian History, and President of the Equine History Collective, an international group of researchers.  I hope you enjoy these pages which are devoted to the horse in history and archaeology – as well as its human. I intend to add reviews, journeys, videos and images to the web site as it grows. The fabulous image of the White Horse of Uffington was kindly provided by the Vale of White Horse District Council. Happy reading and happy trails! Miriam

    • Hello John! The book should be available very soon. We’ve had a brief delay while finishing two other projects, but not long now I hope. If you email or message me at the end of July I will have more news. All the best, Miriam

      • Dear Miriam

That is wonderful and exciting news ! As a descendant of Reivers in Dumfriesshire, your work will have special weight with me, and I will be in touch with you again at the end of July.

        Every good wish,

        John

  1. Hi Miriam, I was part of the audience today for your fascinating talk at the Catstrand about the Galloway Nag
Like the writer of the previous post I’d love to know when your research will be published.
I’ve always envisaged Owain Glyndwr riding through the Welsh mountains on a shaggy ancestor of a Welsh Section C type pony, now I shall add the image of Robert the Bruce on a mount something like an Icelandic horse with a feel of a not too posh fell pony.

    • Hi Julie, good to hear from you and I’m glad you enjoyed the talk! That’s exactly how I imagine them too, I must say. As soon as the book is available I’ll let everyone know. All the best, Miriam

    • Hello Emma! Good to hear from you. Thanks for contacting me, and for attending the talk. I have your email address and as soon as the book is available I’ll let you know. All the best, Miriam

  2. Morning Miriam
I spoke with you briefly after your excellent talk at the CatStrand re researching old estates in Galloway. Could you give me your email as I am not on social media of any kind to pass on.
    Many thanks
    Jennifer

  3. Dear Dr. Bibby,

I am researching the life of George Digby of Sandon, Staffordshire. The grade 1, Sandon Church on the Harrowby estate will be 1,000 years old next year and the Church History Group holds a Heritage Open Day in September, my research will be for next years HOD.

I have recently found your interesting articles in Cheiron on the Royal Mares. My research has found references to Digby being appointed Surveyor of the Tutbury stud during the Civil War in 1644. Tutbury is not too far from Sandon. There are some letters between Prince Rupert and Lord Loughborough regarding the horses there and correspondence between Digby and Parliamentarian commanders in Staffordshire.

There is a good article by the historian Ivor Carr in English Civil War Times Number 48 1993.

Would it be possible for me to quote in my contribution to the HOD, from your articles referencing Tutbury, with the proper accreditation?

               Phillip Wheeler
